My View on ‘Special Ops’ – TV web series

My View on ‘Special Ops’ – TV web series

- Dr. Balasandilyan

The (Disney+ Hostar) web series 'Special Ops', is a story to find the missing sixth terrorist in the 2001 Parliament attack, Five were killed, but RAW agent Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon) believes that the architect or the main brain is still out there and planning something big. Himmat covertly makes a task force of five people and sends them to different countries to start the hunt: Farooq (Karan Tacker), Juhi (Saiyami Kher), Ruhani (Meher Vij), Avinash (Muzammil Ibrahim) and Balakrishnan (Vipul Gupta). We normally feel that the soldiers in the border only save our country in times of difficulty, but this series reveal as to how the Intelligence officers work in a self-less manner and giving their life with total commitment and taking lots of risk every day and in every move.

The series is centred on R&AW officer Himmat Singh who would be retiring in a couple of years and his 19-year manhunt for a man that no one believes even exists. Special OPS has a rather disciplined start.

The plot is well-written and every detail is very minutely stringed. The illuminating secret in every episode keeps the suspense high. Even the action sequences are fascinating, especially when the story is led towards its climax. All the actors have done a great job in convincingly depicting their respective characters. Himmat is a well-rounded role played by Kay Kay Menon, who owns every frame. His wry sense of humour and dialogue delivery is near flawless. Karan Tracker, as one of the main surveillance officers, delivers a reasonably good performance. Both of them show range in every episode and only get better as the story progresses.

Himmat Singh in this series is what Srikanth Tiwari was to The Family Man. Both are bloody good at protecting the country, and are equally inept on the home front. If Srikanth had issues with his wife, Suchitra, Himmat has problems believing his teenage daughter, Pari.  While ‘The Family Man’ was also on the same patriotic line ‘Ops’ makes a mark. The former had Srikanth governing in the story and in the latter one had many to play their roles well.

The similarities continue in how both these characters balance their personal and professional lives. Kay Kay’s Himmat has a wry sense of humour and the strange ability to say the most unlikely things at the most inopportune moments. Take, for instance, the hilarious exchange between Himmat and his auditors.

While there is no doubt that Himmat is a well-rounded character performed by one of India’s best actors, the other characters don’t get that kind of spotlight. Barring the Indian agent Farooq Ali (Karan Tacker) including proven actors like Meher Vij had little roles to play. The same applies to the non-spy characters played by Vinay Pathak and Divya Dutta.

'Special Ops' could have been a winner all together if it was more focussed. Having seen ‘Viswaroopam’ part 1 & 2 by the veteran Actor Kamal Hassan as a movie in the same line – this web series had better Castings, Camera, Costumes, Characterisation etc. The locations in some of the episodes were truly amazing. The ‘Ops’ and ‘The Family Man’ had something in common – one cannot miss to watch the next episode on the next day. You are truly tempted and pushed to watch the series continuously. Such is the thrilling moment created by the Director.

Do watch both the series. Something fresh and patriotic indeed too that makes you watch it with vigour and interest.
