Sleep pattern

Dear Friends,

Many of us suffer from sleep deprivation. Shifting work schedules, stress, having had extra guests in the house over the recent holidays can all affect your sleep patterns and leave you feeling tired and out of sorts. Of course, these problems can happen at any time of the year, but there are things you can do to help improve your sleep even when circumstances aren't optimal.

Your own personal sleep patterns will affect your ability to respond to disruptions or make changes; some people are night owls, while others may be early risers. Some can get by on six hours of sleep and others may need nine hours. If your work schedule doesn't fit your sleep pattern, your health and temperament can suffer. If you need to make an adjustment, do so gradually. You just need to reset you body's inner sleep clock by adjusting your bedtime in 30-minute increments every few days until you are fully on a new schedule.

If you have trouble falling sleep, regardless of any schedule changes, there are steps you can take to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Avoiding alcohol or stimulants like caffeine or chocolate for at least several hours before bedtime is an important first step in getting to sleep. The same goes for exercising around your bedtime, which also energizes the body and mind, which is the last thing you need if you are trying to drop off into peaceful slumber.

Did you ever wonder why so many people love to sleep in motel rooms where they feel free to lower the temperature and pile on the blankets? There's a very good reason for this. Sleeping in a hot room or using electric blankets can cause disrupted sleep because the body requires a cooler core temperature as you fall asleep in order to promote deep sleep. If you've ever struggled to fall asleep on a hot summer night without air conditioning you will know what I am talking about.

Power naps are another solution for boosting energy levels, especially on those days when you didn't get enough sleep. A 20-minute catnap during your lunch hour (provided you have a quite place to close your eyes) or before late afternoon can make all the difference and provide you more energy and alertness than a cup of coffee or tea. And don't miss out on the opportunity to sleep in on your days off or on weekends so that you can catch up on rest. It is fun to be able to ignore the alarm clock and have a bit of a lounge every now and then.

I hope these sleep tips will help you get sound sleep no matter what your day brings. Rest is so important to your state of mind and the better rested you are, the better you can cope with things that come your way.

New Year Resolution

Dear Friends,

How often have your New Year's resolutions been forgotten by

January 2nd? I thought it would be fun to devise a

New Year Ritual to help support those good intentions for 2011.

The ritual involves cleansing ourselves of what we want to

remove from our life and affirming ourselves of the things

we want to invite into our life.

Here is what you need to do. Go to a calm, quiet place you

won't be disturbed. Draw the curtains and dim the lights or

light a candle, or even some incense if you like. Breathe

deeply until you feel relaxed – but don't fall asleep. Let

your mind drift over the past 12 months, think about all

that you've done. Then, write down on a piece of paper

all your achievements and everything that gave you

pleasure this past year.

Next, on another piece of paper, list everything you

want for yourself in 2011. It can be as detailed as you like.

The clearer you are about with your intentions, the

easier it is for the Universe to provide it. When finished,

put this paper in a safe place, like the back of a drawer.

This is the first part of your Resolutions.

The next part involves letting go. Most of us have one or

two habits we'd like to break, like negative thought

patterns that prevent us from doing what we'd like to do.

Or perhaps there is an emotion we can't quite let go of,

one that no longer serves any purpose other than to

bring us down.

On a separate piece of paper, write down the things

you'd like to remove or eradicate from your life.

When you are finished, put the paper where it won't be

disturbed. Then on Tuesday, the 4th, if there are

anything additional you'd like to add to your list, go ahead.

Now you are ready for the last step, which takes place at night.

On the night of the 4th, you are ready for the final step,

which involves burning your lists. Take all your pieces of

paper and burn them, one at a time. As you do, say out loud

or silently, "I no longer need ………… in my life". While

doing this, think about all your negatives going up in

smoke and your wish list gathering strength in the darkness!

Best Wishes for a Very Happy New Year!

happiness

Dear Friends, I have a question for you: What does it take to make you happy? Is it more money, spare time, good friends, a better job? Through my many years of advising clients, I have confronted a common theme regarding happiness. In fact, I've come across it so often that I've named it the "I'll be happy when …" syndrome. It is a very common expression that we have all said. "I will be happy when I don't have to get up at 6:30 am to catch the bus to work." "I will be happy when my husband shows more respect for me." "I will be happy when I get my new car." And it goes on and on about a state of mind that remains in the future rather than in the here and now. Happiness shouldn't be something sagging out there in the world of tomorrow or someday. It isn't a feeling to experience once something else happens. It is something to be experienced now, in this moment. While our anticipation or focus on the future is perfectly fine, connecting happiness to future events can cause us to miss out on any immediate opportunities for joy and fulfillment.Friends, happiness is more powerful when experienced as an immediate emotion than seen as a carrot to be sought after. Interestingly, many people find that when they place future conditions on happiness, even when those conditions are met, they don't feel the pleasure they had expected to. The key is to learn how to let go of the unknown future and the unchangeable past and allow the goodness of the moment to fill you with inner peace. The present moment is all that we have, and when you find meaning and satisfaction in the present, your future will take care of it.Happiness means feeling pleasure about what you have right this minute. In any given moment, if we try hard enough, we can find good and positive things to be happy about. Maybe it is simply that the sun is out and shining warmly on our skin in the winter or we are enjoying a nice cup of hot tea with a good friend. Or maybe after a tough day at work, we know we have done our very best, or we shared time with a child. These are things to think about as we enter the new year. I hope that today you will acknowledge the many blessings in your life that make each moment a cause for joy and happiness. And I must warn you that happiness can be contagious, so you just might end up having a positive effect on those around you as well. Many Happy New Years' Wishes for the year ahead,

Women are wiser

The Obedient Wife' There was a man, who had worked all his life, had saved all of his money, And was a real miser when it came to his money. Just before he died, he said to his wife...'When I die, I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me.' And so he got his wife to promise him, with all of her heart, that when he died, she would put all of the money into the casket with him.

Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket, his wife was sitting there - dressed in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, and just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, 'Wait just a moment!' She had a small metal box with her; she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down and they rolled it away. So her friend said, 'Girl, I know you were not foolish enough to put all that money in there with your husband.' The loyal wife replied, I cannot go back on my word. I promised him that I was going to put that money into the casket with him.' You mean to tell me you put that money in the casket with him!?!?!?' 'I sure did,' said the wife.. 'I got it all together, put it into my account, and wrote him a cheque.... If he can cash it, then he can spend it.'
