Beryl - a rare Gem - Matron of Pubic Health Center

Beryl Johnson, Matron of Public Health Center, Chennai is retiring this year. Prior to joining PHC she worked for Cancer Hospital for nearly 14 years. She has almost all problems in her personal life. In spite of all that she is doing a great service to the suffering people for over three and half decades. She says though the retirement is 58 and hence she is retiring, she would continue to serve for another 10 years as she is physically and mentally fit. She shared some unforgettable experience from her service - especially in the Cancer Hospital, where she has seen some going back home after cure and some leaving this world with lots of suffering. She remembers two different cases distinctly. She attended a young boy who was discharged saying he cannot be saved with medical treatment. She told the boy not to worry and God would take care of him. The smiled and  said he would go back to his native place and send a saree for her. As promised the saree came by post but from his parents saying that the boy is no more. It was painful when she read the note. Similarly she sent off another patient to his native place when he had no enough money to buy medicines. She helped him with medicines for another few months. She recalls different kinds of experience - family members bring patients to take them back home after due treatment. Many a times they could take only their bodies. Job of the Nurse is very tough. She cannot express any emotion but only care, love and attention. There are many such people involved in this noble profession. Beryl is one such 'Gem' I have come across in the recent past. I very sincerely admire this lady who is God-loving, caring and smiling and never ever shows her pain and trouble to patients. Salute to such BERYLs.

கடந்த முப்பது ஆண்டுகளைத் தாண்டி நர்ஸ் வேலை பார்த்து வரும் சகோதரி பெரில் ஜான்சன் தற்போது பப்ளிக் ஹெல்த் சென்டரில் மாட்ரேன் ஆக வேலை பார்த்து வருகிறார். இந்த ஆண்டு பணி ஓய்வும் பெறுகிறார். கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை, கனிவு, பரிவு எல்லாம் நிறைந்திருக்கும் இவர்க்கு சொந்த வாழ்வில் எத்தனையோ சோதனைகள். இருப்பினும் அவற்றை வெளிக்காட்டாமல் வேலையில் காட்டாமல் கர்மமே கண்ணாக அரும்பணியாற்றும் இவரை பாராட்ட வார்த்தை இல்லை. இன்னும் பத்து வருடம் சேவை ஆற்றி விட்டு தான் ஓய்வு பெறுவேன் - இது ஆண்டவன் எனக்கு இட்ட கட்டளை என்கிறார். இதற்கு முன்பு 14 ஆண்டுகள் கான்செர் மருத்துவமனையில் பணியாற்றிய இவரது அனுபவங்கள் மனதை வருடுகின்றன. ஒரு முறை ஒரு இளைஞரை  இனி குணப்படுத்த இயலாது என்ற சூழலில் வீட்டிற்கு அனுப்பும் போது இவர் சொன்னார் - உங்களை ஆண்டவன் நிச்சயம் காப்பாற்றுவார். அந்த சிறுவன் சிரித்து விட்டு நான் போய் உங்களுக்கு ஒரு சேலை அனுப்புகிறேன் என்றான். அவன் சொன்னது போல சேலையும் வந்தது. ஆனால் அந்த பார்சலில் இருந்த கடிதம் அவன் தந்தையிடம் இருந்து - அந்த சிறுவன் உயிரோடு இல்லை என்று. அந்த சேலையை கண்ணீர் மல்க வீட்டிற்கு கொண்டு சென்று அவன் நினைவாக அடிக்கடி பயன்படுத்தினாராம்.

பிழைப்போம் எனும் நம்பிக்கையோடு வரும் சிலர் குணமாகி வீடு திரும்புவதும் சிலர் பிணமாகி செல்லுவதும் இவர் அதிக உணர்வு காட்டாமல் பார்த்து இருக்கிறார். ஒரு நர்ஸ் வேலை என்பது மிகவும் உன்னதமான ஒன்று. பொறுமை, திறமை, சமயோசிதம், பசி தாகம் வலி பாராமல் பிறர்க்கு சேவை செய்ய மனம் எல்லாம் வேண்டும். பெரில் சிஸ்டர் போல இந்த உலகில் பலர் இருந்தாலும் நான் சந்தித்த ஒரு அற்புத பெண்மணி இவர் என்று சொல்லலாம். ரகசியங்களை காப்பதும், டாக்டருக்கு உறுதுணையாக இருப்பதும், எப்போதும் கனிவாக இருப்பதும் இவர் கற்றுக் கொண்ட பாடங்கள். இவரது அரும்பணி மேலும் சிறக்க வேண்டும். ஆண்டவன் இவருக்கு மன நிம்மதி, ஆரோக்கியம் வழங்க வேண்டும். இவரை இன்று பெரிதும் போற்றி மகிழ்கிறேன். இவர் போல் இந்த அரிய சேவை ஆற்றும் சகோதரிகளை இந்த நாளில் தலை வணங்குகிறேன்.
