Different people do different/difficult jobs during the day to get their stomach filled. Here is a man who fills air to fill his stomach. He is Pandian in a nearby petrol booth - helping people to check and fill air in their wheels of two/three/four wheel vehicles. I have been seeing him for the past 7 to 8 years. He is not smiling always - yet doing his job with care and sincerity. Air has to be filled according to standards of each vehicle or as per instructions by the respective driver or owner. This job also has its own hazard - like he has to get up, sit down, adjust the machine, hold the valve tight etc. He will not demand money from people but accept what people pay. If people give him a note, he may take a rupee more. Otherwise he is very reasonable. The point is, he is not a salaried employee of the bunk. He works or survives only on tips by customers - air is a free service to the customers (add on). Pandian gets around Rs. 300 to 350 a day. But the job is very tough. He has to work continuously and in all seasons. He has to pay some money to his colleagues by way of tea or cigar to keep them happy. He rarely takes leave. In a way for the right mileage of our vehicle - he is responsible. There are lots of people like him in various petrol bunks. Yet I find that Pandian is continuing in the same job/location - which I see as a very rare thing in other places. I admire this guy for his hard work and dedication.
வயிற்றை நிரப்ப இவர் காற்றை நிரப்புகிறார். காற்று பரவிக் கிடந்தாலும் நமது வண்டியின் சக்கரத்தில் இருந்தால் மட்டுமே அது உருளும்/நகரும். எத்தனையோ பேர் எத்தனையோ விதமான வேலை பார்த்தாலும், அந்தந்த வேலைக்கு உரிய கஷ்டங்கள் தனி தான். அதனை ஆகுபேஷனல் ஹஜார்ட் என்று சொல்வார்கள். இந்த காற்று நிரப்பும் வேலை மிக கடினம் தான். இரண்டு/மூன்று/நான்கு சக்கரங்கள் கொண்ட பல்வேறு வாகனங்களுக்கு காற்று நிரப்ப வேண்டும். அதுவும் அதனதன் அளவீடு அறிந்து. வெயில் மழை பாராது தொடர்ந்து வரும் வண்டிகளுக்கு சேவை செய்ய வேண்டும். அதிலும் முதலில் சில வண்டிகளின் முன் வீலுக்கு, பிறகு பின் வீலுக்கு என்று பிரித்து செய்வது ஸ்மார்ட் வேலை. வேலை செய்யும் இடத்தில் வேலை உண்டு. சம்பளம் இல்லை. உடன் வேலை செய்பவர்களை அனுசரித்து போகவில்லை என்றால் நமது வேலை போகும். அவர்களுக்கு டீ, சிகரெட் வாங்கி வந்து தர வேண்டும். அவ்வப்போது காற்று மிசினை பராமரிக்க வேண்டும். நாளுக்கு 300 முதல் 350 வரை வருமானம் கிடைக்கும். ஏழு ஆண்டுகளாக நான் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் பாண்டியன் அவர்களோடு சில வார்த்தைகள் பேசி படம் பிடித்தேன். தொடர்ந்து ஒரே இடத்தில் வேலை பார்ப்பவர்கள் இன்று மிக அரிது. பாண்டியன் மிக கடின உழைப்பாளி. அதிகம் அடித்துப் பேசி காசு வாங்க மாட்டார். சிலர் கொடுக்காமல் கூட போவர். சில கார் முதலாளிகள் பத்து ரூபாய் கூட கொடுப்பர். அதிகம் சிரிக்க பேச வாய்ப்பு இல்லாத இந்த வேலை செய்யும் பாண்டியன் அவர்களை நான் இன்று மனதார பாராட்டுகிறேன். இவர் நீடு வாழ்க.
